Unwanted plants management

Your lawn is made up of a wide variety of plants including perennial and annual grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues, as well as broadleaf grasses, some of which flower at different times of the year. It is this biodiversity that makes your lawn an attractive environment for beneficial insects such as pollinators. This is what is known as a sustainable lawn – a lawn that may not look perfect, but that fully fulfils its environmental functions.

Increasing your tolerance threshold

Some less desirable plants – more commonly referred to as weeds – are present in small quantities and do not affect the health of your lawn. The days of perfect lawns are over, and we must accept a few imperfections for the sake of our planet’s health.

A dense and healthy lawn: your best ally against unwanted guests!

Good cultural practices such as fertilization, aeration, topdressing and overseeding will improve soil quality, build density and improve the quality of your lawn. The healthier your lawn is, the less room it has for other plants to take hold. Also, raise the blades of your mower. You’ll be surprised at how your lawn will respond if you leave it longer.

However, some highly invasive or damaging weeds such as crabgrass, ragweed or hogweed need to be controlled to prevent them from overgrowing to the detriment of other plants. Your Nutrite Expert is trained and qualified to take care of your lawn.

Control products

Since the introduction of the Pesticides Management Code in 2003, the amount of herbicides available for weed management is much less and the control products are not what they used to be. We have seen the emergence of biological products that are quite effective in controlling broadleaves such as dandelion and plantain. These products work differently from the old molecules and require adaptation in terms of expectations and result requirements. Lawn care professionals have a smaller toolbox than they did 20 years ago, but can still take care of your sustainable lawn. Be wary of the promises and impressive results guaranteed by some companies.

Making the right diagnosis

If an unwanted plant takes hold in your lawn, it is because the conditions are right for it. If you want to limit its spread and regain control of your green space, the first step is to properly identify the species and make the necessary corrections.
