White grub problems
Cycle Description
The white worm is the larval stage of the European chafer, June beetle and Japanese beetle. It is white, plump and “C” shaped with a yellowish-brown head and 6 hairy legs. The adult insect has either black, brown or metallic color wings. Worms spend winter in the soil and not in the grass. In spring, the larvae come back to the surface and devour the grass roots. By late May, the larvae have transformed into adults, mate and then lay eggs in June-July. In August-September, the eggs hatch and the worms eat the grass roots until the cold period begins in November. The following spring, the cycle is repeated.
Damage
Damage is caused by the worms and not by the adult beetles. The worm population of one season can destroy entire lawns. Yellow-white patches of grass expand rapidly and die. The grass can easily be pulled out and you can see the worms by lifting the patches of dead grass.
Control
There is no curative product for grubs; we must therefore act in prevention. When the damage is visible, it is too late. A dense and healthy lawn is your best ally to prevent infestations. If necessary, Nutrite Pelouse Idéale uses in the spring or early summer a low toxicity insecticide which offers good results. Vigilance is required in August and September, this is when the symptoms appear. Contact your Nutrite Expert to confirm the infestation, help you repair the damage and plan the treatment next spring.
Crabgrass control
Cycle Description
Crabgrass is an annual grass; it dies in the fall. In the spring, young plants are dense and look like grass but are paler green in color. During the summer season, the foliage lays on the ground to form a rosette. In August, thin stems grow like fingers and thousands of seeds fall to the ground. At the end of the season the foliage withers and dies. The cycle is repeated the following year with the thousands of seeds that have fallen to the ground from the previous year. Crabgrass remains a highly invasive plant precisely because one plant gives out thousands of seeds. These seeds are easily dispersed in the wind and germinate in compact soils such as garden soils.
Natural Control
- Fertilize regularly to maintain a dense lawn.
- When the appearance of seeds appears, cut the lawn to 1.5” in able to collect the seeds and prevent them from falling to the ground.
- At this stage, because the roots are shallow, hand weeding is relatively easy.
Advice
Once crabgrass has been removed it is very important to cover the bare spots with compost and seeds or grass patches to prevent the germination of crabgrass once again.
